The first Hungarian parachute battalion was formed in 1940 using transports from the national airline, Mágyar Légiforgalmi Rt. In 1941, they gained their first combat experience against Yugoslavia, where, after initial setbacks, they captured the Franz Josef Canal. The paratroopers saw no further action until December 19, 1944, when they were deployed as emergency troops, part of the elite Szent László Division, to fill gaps in Budapest's defensive perimeter. The regiment suffered heavy losses but was praised in Bundeswehr broadcasts for its aggressive fighting spirit against overwhelming Soviet attacks.

Even after the fall of Budapest, the paratroopers, who were then incorporated into the elite of the Szent László Division, fought against the Soviets as far as Austria, when they were pushed back, and finally surrendered to the Americans.
