Victory at Sea: HMS Warspite

HMS Warspite was a Queen Elizabeth-class battleship of the Royal Navy. She was built in the early 1910s and served in the First World War, including at the Battle of Jutland. Modernized in the 1930s, she subsequently saw service in the Second World War.

Warspite participated in the Norwegian Campaign of 1940 and was subsequently transferred to the Mediterranean, where she participated in naval actions against the Italian Regia Marina. During the Battle of Crete in mid-1941, she was damaged by enemy German aircraft and spent six months in the United States for repairs. These repairs were completed shortly after the US entered the war, and in early 1942 she sailed across the Pacific to join the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean.

She returned home in 1943 to provide support for air support as part of Troop H in the Italian Campaign. Upon landing in Salerno, she suffered further damage, this time from radio-controlled glider bombs. She spent almost another year in repairs.

Before her repairs were fully completed, she was back at sea the following year, supporting the fire brigade during the Normandy and Walcheren landings in 1944. These actions earned her recognition as the most combat-experienced ship in the history of the Royal Navy and also gave her the affectionate nickname "Grand Old Lady".

After the war ended, it was taken out of service and ran aground in 1947 while being towed.
