Victory at Sea: HMS Ark Royal

As one of the war's most famous aircraft carriers, HMS Ark Royal received numerous battle decorations during her service. The first enemy aircraft shot down by the Fleet Air Arm was one of her Blackburn Skuas, while her bombers sank the German cruiser Königsberg, marking the first instance of a major ship being sunk by an aerial attack. More memorable, however, is Ark Royal's role in the sinking of the Bismarck, when her Fairey Swordfish launched a torpedo attack that damaged the ship's rudder, leaving her vulnerable to the rest of the fleet.

Other notable actions included convoys to Malta, the Norwegian campaign, and participation in the first submarine sinking of the war.

In 1941, she was hit by a torpedo and sank while being towed.
