At the beginning of World War II, the He 111 was the Luftwaffe's most numerous and probably best-known medium bomber. Although robust and popular, the Battle of Britain revealed the He 111's weakness: its weak defensive armament. As more modern bombers became available at the front, the He 111 was gradually reassigned to various roles, including maritime patrol and transport/logistics.
