When the US Navy and Marine Corps entered World War II, they had only one effective combat aircraft at their disposal: the F4F Wildcat. Fortunately, the Wildcat proved more than capable of holding the line.

Although the Wildcat was superior to the lighter Japanese Zero in turns and climbs, it was significantly more robust and more heavily armed than its opponent. Even when larger, more modern fighter aircraft took over the interceptor role, the useful little Wildcat remained in production until the end of the war.
