Mortars were among the most widely used support weapons of the Second World War. Their relatively light weight and ability to fire indirectly over a wide range of distances made them incredibly useful in virtually any combat situation. The German 81mm medium mortar was used by all branches of the Wehrmacht and was particularly valued by veterans for its devastating effect against enemy troops in cover.

As an essential component of Heavy Weapons Platoons in Bolt Action, medium mortars offer commanders the ability to fire indirect fire over the heads of their troops, ignoring cover when hitting their targets. Medium mortars aimed at the enemy by scouts can control large areas of the battlefield if used effectively.
