When the German army crossed the border into Russia in 1942, they possessed a secret weapon codenamed Nebelwerfer (Smoke Launcher). This was a multi-barreled rocket launcher whose projectiles flew thousands of meters to bombard enemy positions...

With a terrifying flash of flame and a horrific howl, this weapon caused destruction and terror. It laid down a barrage over a less precise area than most artillery, but had a psychological effect that could undermine the will of the defenders.
