Black Powder: French Chasseurs à Cheval

Originally formed in 1743, the Chasseurs à Cheval (Mounted Hunters) were a green-uniformed light cavalry whose main task was to carry out patrols and swift raids for the French army. A good chasseur was practically at home on his horse, engaging in important skirmishes with the enemy cavalry or detecting enemy movements, thus being a vital element of the army for the French commanders.
Armed with scimitars, carbines and bayonets (bayonets were rather unpopular with the Chasseurs and were more often used for digging up vegetables, or were "lost") The Chasseurs were born for fighting on horseback, but also made very good soldiers on foot when it could not be avoided.
At the height of the French army and under Bonaparte's rule, there were 31 regiments of Chasseurs à Cheval. However, by the end of the Hundred Days campaign, which culminated in the Battle of Waterloo, only 15 regiments remained.
