With the declaration of war on Germany in 1939, the French armed forces did not necessarily have worse tanks and ships than the Wehrmacht, but rather suffered from outdated tactical and strategic knowledge.

Alongside their British allies, the French army fought one valiant rearguard action after another. The most remarkable high point in their retreat from Europe was at Dunkirk. Despite the strategically sound British withdrawal to England, the French forces stubbornly continued fighting until the Germans closed the ring around Paris...
