The French army began World War II as the strongest army in the world. Its infantry divisions were well-equipped, possessed excellent tanks and artillery, were numerous, and confident of repelling the hated Germans, just as they had twenty-two years earlier. However, this was not the same war, and all too often, French infantrymen found themselves facing German armored units that had outmaneuvered them as the Blitzkrieg swept across Europe.

It was a matter of honor for France and its regiments that so many Frenchmen dug in and fought against a tactically more advanced enemy. The French fought resolutely in battles like Hannut, Arra, Boulogne, and Saumur against the extensive offensives of the German invaders, giving their all.

Many brave Frenchmen subsequently fought against the Allies in Vichy France, inspiring both admiration and disgust, while others returned to France with the Allied invasion in 1944 to reclaim their homeland...
