Adolf Hitler, who suffered heavy losses in the attack on Crete during Operation Mercury, forbade the German airborne troops from withdrawing any further airborne troops.

The paratroopers instead functioned as elite infantry, serving in all theaters where Germany fought. Supported by two high-rate-of-fire weapons—the deadly MG42 general-purpose machine gun and the Granatwerfer 34 8 cm medium mortar—they were respected by the Allies for their combat effectiveness and honorable actions.
