The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a robust fighter aircraft of the US Navy. It proved extremely effective in combat and was responsible for 75% of the US Navy's aerial victories in the Pacific. This astonishing figure equates to 5,156 Japanese aircraft destroyed while only 270 F6Fs were lost in aerial combat.

The first production model entered service in August 1943 and proved very popular with pilots due to its high performance, firepower, and reasonable maneuverability. Of the 4,402 aircraft produced, 252 were delivered under Lend-Lease for use by the Fleet Air Arm in the United Kingdom (known as the Hellcat Mk1).
