The Vought F4U Corsair was designed as a carrier-based fighter, but flying from rough island airfields in tropical conditions was no obstacle. The battles of Guadalcanal proved its superiority over its Japanese opponents.

The F4U flew over 60,000 sorties during the war (only 9,000 of which were from carrier decks) for the US Navy & Marines and the US Navy (approximately 40% of all fighter sorties), with only 9,581 sorties (15%) flown from carrier decks. The Corsairs achieved 2,140 aerial victories and 189 losses to enemy aircraft, resulting in an overall kill ratio of over 11:1. It also demonstrated its versatility by delivering over 70% of all bombs dropped by US fighters during the war.
