Following Napoleon's entry into Paris and the start of the Hundred Days Campaign, King William II of Prussia recalled Blücher from his retirement in Silesia and tasked him with confronting the rising French power. He was given command of the Army of the Lower Rhine and marched rapidly westward to join the Anglo-Dutch allies, hoping to consolidate their forces.

Unfortunately, the Prussian army was hastily assembled and sent into battle with poor equipment and inadequate training. More than a third of the troops consisted of Landwehr soldiers, some of whom marched into battle barefoot. At the Battle of Ligny, the Prussian army faced Napoleon directly and suffered a crushing defeat, with Blücher himself trapped for hours, wounded, beneath his dead horse. The Battle of Waterloo offered a chance for redemption.
