Early Imperial Romans: Testudo

In the few instances where Rome's mighty legions were defeated or outwitted on the battlefield, this often led to major Roman innovations, technological advances, or tactical skills.

When Rome was bombarded with slings, spears, or arrows by its enemies from all over the known world, it found the answer - the Testudo!

A whistle blew, orders were shouted, and the legionaries formed up in the "turtle", a legendary formation in which all troops protected themselves with an interlocking "armor" of scutum shields, allowing them to withstand incoming projectiles before launching an attack!

This Testudo comes complete with grim-looking legionaries, arrows to load your scutum shields, and a stern centurion to maintain the formation!
