Blood Red Skies: Douglas Dauntless & Devastator Squadron

In the Battle of Midway, the US Navy deployed two aircraft: the SBD-3 Dauntless dive bomber and the TBD-1 Devastator torpedo bomber. At Midway, the Dauntless aircraft destroyed all four Japanese aircraft carriers.

The significance of the Douglas SBD Dauntless's performance during the war cannot be overstated. Despite relatively poor maneuverability and only adequate performance, it was this aircraft that brought down all four Japanese aircraft carriers in the decisive Battle of Midway. Despite this achievement, the type was withdrawn from service before the end of the war, even though it had only entered service in 1940.

The TBD Devastator entered service in 1937 and was briefly the most advanced flying aircraft in the world's navies. However, given the rapid pace of technological development, it was already obsolete by the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. At Midway, 41 Devastators scored zero torpedo hits, and only six returned to their carriers. Their sole success was diverting enemy Zeros with Dauntless dive bombers. The aircraft was withdrawn from service shortly after Midway and replaced by the Grumman TBF Avenger.
