Colonial Militia Men
The British Army in America was tiny by comparison. This forced the British military to hire militias in addition to mercenaries. These were mostly units loyal to the British Crown, recruited locally and equipped with modern muskets. The military capabilities of these units varied greatly. Some, thanks to their experienced leaders, performed almost as well as regular troops, while others fled after suffering only a few losses. Thousands of militias fought loyally for the Crown, but also on the side of the Americans.
