Britain's armies had suffered terribly under the fierce Japanese attacks of 1941 and 1942, leading some to regard the ordinary Japanese soldier as an invincible enemy in the steaming jungles of the Far East.

Brigadier General Orde Wingate thought differently and organized long columns of British, Indian, and Burmese troops to rush behind Japanese lines without support, wreaking havoc on the roads and supply trains.
