When the Hellenistic king Pyrrhus of Epirus invaded Sicily in the early third century BC, he brought with him a number of Indian elephants, echoing the conquests of his cousin Alexander the Great in Asia. His Carthaginian adversaries were so impressed by the beasts' battlefield performance that they set about establishing their own corps of elephants. These mighty beasts lived up to their fearsome reputation in the Punic Wars, accompanying Hannibal on his march through the Alps to invade Italy.
