After the failure of Operation Barbarossa to completely defeat the Soviet Union, a new plan was devised: Case Blue. This plan called for an advance through the southern Soviet Union into the Caucasus to secure the oil fields that Germany so desperately needed. While significant successes and far-reaching advances initially seemed possible in the autumn, the Axis powers' progress stalled due to Soviet resistance and counterattacks, culminating in the fighting in and around Stalingrad.
