BT-7 Light Tank

The Soviet Army of World War Two was not short of fast cavalry tanks. The BT-7 was built in thousands and saw action in the early battles against the Japanese and later against the invading Germans. Reaching an impressive 44 kph on road and over 30 kph cross-country, it weighed over thirteen tons and used its speed as protection rather than its light 20mm armour. The BT-7 carried a three-man crew - the driver, loader and commander who doubled as gunner, were busy operating a 45mm main gun and a co-axial machine gun. The tank, like many Soviet war machines, was rather crude, and casualties were high - over 2,000 were destroyed or abandoned in the first year on the Eastern Front. However, like most Soviet products, these were produced in vast quantities - over 5,000 were manufactured and used by the Red Army for almost the entire war. Quantity has a quality all of its own!
