British & Inter-Allied Commandos Starter Army

The Commandos earned an extraordinary reputation for courage and bravery during the Second World War. They were formed in 1940 on the orders of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, with the express aim of taking the fight to the seemingly unstoppable German forces who had thrown the British Expeditionary Force out of France with such ease.

The all-volunteer force recruited from across the armed forces. As such, there were Army Commandos, Royal Marine Commandos, and the Inter-Allied Commando Regiment, which included nationalities such as the Belgians, Poles, Dutch, and others.

The Commandos fought in campaigns across Europe, Burma, and Africa and were decorated for many famous actions, including arguably the greatest raid of them all – St Nazaire. Commandos were used in many different forms - from units of less than a whole section to entire assault divisions, depending on the task at hand. Superbly trained, aggressive in action, well-equipped, and deadly in close quarter fighting, the Commandos were rightly feared by their German, Italian, and Japanese foes.
