BP Epic Battles: ACW Infantry Regiment Firing Line

In many of history’s civil wars, both sides were very similarly equipped, with the colour of their uniforms and the flags under which they fought being the distinguishing characteristics. This was no different for the Union and Confederate forces in the American Civil War, and these miniatures presenting arms on the firing line are equally suitable for painting as a Union or Confederate regiment.

Union soldiers wore dark blue tunics, light blue trousers, and were armed with percussion cap rifles. They learned to manoeuvre and march long distances to take the war to the South. Early regiments were of varied quality, with few having drilled before, let alone seeing significant active service. By the war’s end, they were a tough and efficient force, a match for their ‘Johnny Reb’ opponent.

Confederate regiments were tough, with many in their ranks used to hardship and familiar with firearms. This was just as well, as compared to their northern Union opponents they were often ill-equipped, fed, and armed – much of their equipment was taken from captured Federal stores or privately acquired. Better-equipped troops favoured Enfield Rifled Muskets when available, but many rifle types were employed throughout the war, with even old flintlocks seeing service in reserve units. Southern troops were renowned for their swift and fearsome attacks, many letting out the uncanny ‘Rebel Yell’ to unnerve their ‘blue-bellied’ opponents.
