BP Epic Battles: ACW Artillery Battery

By the time of the American Civil War, artillery had evolved into a deadly weapon on the battlefield, employed in great numbers by both Union and Confederate armies. Some guns were still old-fashioned smoothbore muzzle-loaders, used to great effect in the Napoleonic Wars. Many others, however, were highly accurate rifled pieces that could hurl shrapnel shells 2,000 yards or more. When things got up close and personal, the guns could employ canister at deadly ranges to sweep away attacking troops.
