The British Expeditionary Force was an army of nearly a third of a million soldiers sent to France to resist the aggression of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. Allied with Belgium and powerful French forces, it comprised ten infantry divisions, artillery, armored brigades, and supporting air squadrons.

General Lord Gort's BEF fought well, but was outmaneuvered too often, leading to a tactical retreat and the heroic but tragic withdrawal at Dunkirk in May and June 1940.
