A casual glance at Tommy Atkins from the Victorian era revealed little about his fighting prowess. He averaged 1.5 meters in height, often shorter, and might not have been able to read or write. This appearance, however, was deceptive. The average British redback was the most dangerous animal in Africa, equipped with the Martini-Henry breech-loading rifle, which, if necessary, he could fire in volleys 15 times per minute at a range of 1200 yards.

His legendary discipline, his marching ability "enough to cross all kinds of terrain" and his determination to fight his enemies, who were legion, made the British Redcoats a relentless foe.
Well-led, well-equipped, and thoroughly trained in their skills, they paved the way for the Empire throughout the world. Cheerful and self-assured, the Redcoats of the county regiments served their sovereign well, crushing their enemy with concentrated rifle fire and, if necessary, selling their lives dearly behind the thrust of their vicious long bayonets.
