During the American Civil War, anything French was fashionable in military circles—especially the dashing uniforms of the Zouave light colonial infantry! Dressed in extravagant, flowing trousers, elaborately decorated jackets, and a variety of jaunty headgear, over 70 regiments were raised by the Union, while a smaller number entered Confederate service. Often starting as light skirmish infantry, some were converted into regular troops (frequently due to a lack of adequate replacement uniforms), while others remained Zouave throughout the war. The Zouave regiments often saw themselves as a kind of elite fighting force, and many units earned a well-deserved reputation as tough and determined fighters.
