Bolt Action: German Afrika Korps LeFH 18 10.5cm Medium Artillery

Based on an original American idea, recoilless guns vented propellant gas through nozzles (ventures) at the rear of the barrel, rather than dampening recoil via a gun's recoil mechanism. Since a weapon's recoil mechanism was always heavy, this allowed for a much lighter weapon on a smaller carriage, suitable for use in the air and in mountainous terrain. The disadvantage was reduced range and the powerful recoil wave was difficult to conceal from enemy point-blank range.

First Krupp, then Rheinmetal, developed the LG40, a 75 mm artillery gun, which was first used by paratroopers in Crete in 1941. A 105 mm version was introduced at the end of 1941 and saw action in North Africa. They were used more as artillery than as anti-tank weapons. Both were light enough to be towed behind a Kettenkrad (tracked motorcycle).
