Originally developed as an anti-aircraft weapon, the 8.8 cm Flak 37 (or eighty-eight, as it was known to the Allied forces) had a high muzzle velocity to achieve the greater ranges of modern bombers at the time. This made the Flak an exceptionally deadly anti-tank weapon. The 88 could also be used as conventional artillery—as one infantryman noted, the 88 was an "anti-everything"...

The fearsome reputation of the 88s grew during their service in the Western Desert, where they were one of the few weapons capable of dealing with the British Matilda II infantry tanks.

Many 88s were equipped with a large gun shield.
