Bolt Action: 8th Army 6 pounder ATG

The QF 6-pdr was a highly successful replacement for the 2-pdr, which was copied by the Americans as the 57mm M1 gun. Its service life was extended by new developments in ammunition that improved its armor penetration, allowing it to eliminate Panthers and Tigers from the flank.

Although supplemented by the 17-pounder, it was never completely replaced and continued to serve in infantry units long after the war ended. The 6-pounder replaced the 2-pounder as the standard armament in British tanks when it became available, but a replacement was still sought. Although high-explosive shells were available, the limited size of the charge meant they were relatively ineffective, making the 6-pounder less than ideal as a tank gun and leading to the development of the 75 mm gun used in British tanks such as the Cromwell and Churchill. The QF 6-pounder, used by the British Air Force, had a special sled that allowed it to be towed like light anti-tank guns.
