The QF 17-pounder was designed to overcome the heavily armored German tanks encountered by the British during the fighting in North Africa. A few hybrid 17-pounders on 25-pounder carriages (called "Pheasants") were sent out in early 1943, but the final version did not enter service until later that year, making its combat debut in Italy. By the time of the campaign in Western Europe, it was in service with the Royal Artillery's anti-tank regiments. The 17-pounder was the most formidable anti-tank gun of the Western Allies, capable of penetrating more than 200 mm of armor at close range with armor-piercing projectiles (APDS). Designed almost exclusively for anti-tank use, the 17-pounder was equipped with high-explosive shells, which were somewhat less effective than their size would suggest—a fact reflected in the special rules in Bolt Action.
