The U.S. Navy accepted her nonetheless, and under Captain Edward Preble, she had the distinction of being the first U.S. Navy ship to cross the equator in the early 1800s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e In the first Barbary War, the tasks shifted to the Mediterranean, with blockade and convoy escort duties at Gibraltar and participation in the Battle of Deme (April 27, 1805).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eFollowing the declaration of war in 1812, the USS Essex, under the command of Captain David Porter, achieved a major success in disrupting British whaling in the Pacific. Beginning in February 1813, Porter managed to capture 12 British whalers and 360 prisoners over the course of a year while sailing around Cape Horn and crossing the Pacific.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e On March 28, 1814, at the Battle of Valparaiso, Porter was forced to surrender to the frigate HMS Phoebe and the warship HMS Cherub when the Essex was too crippled to resist. Of the 12 ships Porter had captured, only one returned to the United States; seven returned to British control, three were sunk, and the Chilean was also lost.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e Reclassified as HMS Essex, she was a 42-gun ship and served as a troop transport in 1819. In 1823, she was used as a prison ship in Cork, and from 1824 to 1834 in Kingstown.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eAs part of a US Navy fleet in the Black Sea, special rules are in place to recognize the successful capture of whaling vessels.
