It was fortunate for the Americans that the handful of aircraft carriers then in service with the US Navy escaped destruction; given subsequent events, it is doubtful that a battleship-only force could have defeated the Imperial Japanese Navy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eDuring the Pacific War, a conflict between the air power of opposing fleets, the aircraft carrier became the most important asset of the US Navy.
