It proved to be a dangerous opponent, but had difficulty reaching the high-flying B29 Superfortresses, which were its primary prey.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e After a year spent addressing serious engine problems, the elegant Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (\"Thunderbolt\"), nicknamed \"Jack\" by the Allies, finally entered frontline service in February 1944. The aircraft was primarily designed to counter the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, but its poor engine performance continued to plague pilots in this role. Nevertheless, the aircraft proved a formidable opponent when Japanese pilots successfully employed its four-cannon armament and its dive-bombing and zoom tactics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe J2Ms were operated from Guam and Saipan, and a small number of aircraft were stationed in the Philippines.
