This would make it an exceptionally deadly anti-tank weapon, as many Allied tank crews would learn to their own peril. The 88 could also be used as a conventional artillery piece—as one infantryman remarked, the 88 was \"anti-everything.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe 88 can, in extreme cases, fire while still attached to its mobile cart and could be fully deployed on its cruciform firing platform to be ready to fire in about two and a half minutes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e Many 88s were equipped with a large shield, although there were many examples where this was omitted. As such a large and heavy weapon, it could only be towed by larger vehicles such as the Sd.Kfz. 7 half-track. \u003cbr\u003eThe 88 saw service during the Spanish Civil War and on all fronts where the Germans fought in World War II. Capable of penetrating armor plates up to 108 mm thick at ranges of up to 1,100 meters, the 88s gained prominence during their deployment in the Western Desert, where they were one of the few weapons capable of engaging the British Matilda II infantry fighting vehicles.
