Known to the Allies as \"George,\" the N1K-2 was considered one of the best land-based fighters the Japanese had ever produced. Initial shortcomings were addressed in the N1K2-J Kai (\"modified\") version. However, it struggled to achieve success as an effective bomber interceptor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e The Shiden-Kai offered pilots not only high speed but also a robust and agile aircraft with four powerful 20mm cannons mounted in the wings. The result was an aircraft that could more than hold its own against the latest Allied fighters such as the F6F Hellcat, the F4U Corsair, and the P-51 Mustang.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe IJN supplied them in limited numbers and distributed them to elite units such as the 343rd Kokutai Naval Fighter Group (established on December 25, 1944, and commanded by Minoru Genda).
