The Type 4 Ho-Ro mounted the Type 38 150mm howitzer. The front of the howitzer was armored with 25mm of armor; the open rear left the crew vulnerable to close-quarters combat and shrapnel.\u003cbr\u003e The 150mm gun primarily fired Type 88 APHE (armor-piercing high-explosive ammunition), although it could also fire HEAT (high-explosive anti-tank) ammunition. The ammunition was stored in a container on the aft engine deck.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e Commissioned towards the end of World War II, the Ho-Ro was used in batteries of four vehicles. It saw action during the Philippine Campaign and the American attack on Okinawa.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe Japanese did not produce their own tanks until 1929, and the first examples were versions of contemporary British and French models from Vickers, Renault, and Carden-Lloyd. Their experience in Manchuria led the Japanese to adopt Russian armaments as a model.\u003cbr\u003e Heavy armor, however, played a minor role in Japan's military strategy, and by the time their armies were forced to confront modern enemy tanks, it was already too late.
