More than a third of the troops consisted of Landwehr soldiers, some of whom marched into battle barefoot. At the Battle of Ligny, the Prussian army faced Napoleon directly and suffered a crushing defeat, with Blücher himself trapped for hours, wounded, beneath his dead horse.
