The dream of many French soldiers was to be accepted into the hallowed ranks of the Guard. Better pay, provisions, uniforms, and a presence that carried them throughout Europe—it was a post of great honor, and they revered their emperor. However, they were far from being mere palace guards, for long and active service made them excellent soldiers who could be relied upon to get the job done.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eThis plastic set contains enough troops to field three battalions of the Guard (80 soldiers each) with their accompanying mounted officers. The Old Guard can be identified by the brass plate on the front of their bearskin caps and the patch on the back. The bearskins of the Middle Guard did not bear the brass plate or the back patch, so these can be painted over to resemble fur. We have included a few extra heads; those wishing to further differentiate their units can replace some of them with the shako or hood to represent the less well-equipped Middle Guard, although this is not strictly necessary!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eAlso included are units of Guard Marines (30 soldiers) and Guard Engineers (30 soldiers). These add further color and variety to the French army. To cover the Guard during attacks, Napoleon deployed \"his beautiful daughters,\" large 12-pounder cannons manned by excellent gunners and with a greater range than most Allied artillery.
