Despite relatively poor maneuverability and only adequate performance, it was this aircraft that brought down all four Japanese aircraft carriers in the decisive Battle of Midway. Despite this achievement, the type was withdrawn from service before the end of the war, even though it had only entered service in 1940.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e The TBD Devastator entered service in 1937 and was briefly the most advanced flying aircraft in the world's navies.
